Driver CPC Directive

In September 2009, Directive 2003/59/EC of the European Union requires all commercial drivers of LGVs to attain a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in addition to their vocational licence.

The underlying objective of the Directive is to improve road safety across the whole of the European Union and improve the economic efficiency of the transport sector.

Anyone aged 18 or over wishing to enter the transport sector as a new driver from September will have to gain the Initial Qualification.

All commercial drivers, no matter how many years they have been driving, will have to work towards a Periodic Qualification, undertaking 35 hours of accredited training within a five year period and every five years after that.

Essentially it means each commercial driver, whether employed or self-employed, will have to undertake seven hours of training each year.

As this compulsory training will not be funded by the government, it will be the responsibility of businesses and ultimately the individual drivers to implement and pay for these programmes.

Benefits of Driver CPC

For employers - Undertaking a properly planned and managed training programme for all their logistics staff will have the potential to reduce accidents, increase efficiency, improve staff morale and job satisfaction. Ultimately it will generally improve business performance overall.

For the individual - Successfully completing Periodic Qualification will improve driver skills and keep each driver up to date with the latest thinking on all aspects of Health and Safety. It will also enable drivers to develop skills and knowledge not only in their present job, but which will equip them for a wide range of job opportunities in the future.

For owner drivers - It will be necessary to have evidence of the Periodic Qualification and will keep drivers up to date on skills and changes in the industry.

Working in partnership with

Van Hee has a wealth of experience in the logistics industry and has trained around 25,000 people. They are an accredited provider of high quality Driver CPC and logistics training across the complete syllabus. This is carried out to a consistent standard throughout the country.

Reynolds has been working closely with Van Hee on a number of projects including NVQ's for drivers, warehousing and storage staff; Numeracy & Literacy papers for 'skills for life'; as well as fork lift truck and manual handling training programmes, all of which have proved hugely popular and successful.

We are now assisting Van Hee to deliver the CPC training programme and were delighted to be appointed as Van Hee's CPC training supplier for the whole of the midlands. Our dedicated Training Centre on the outskirts of Nottingham boasts excellent facilities with one floor of our offices hosting an impressive, purpose-built training suite with capacity to train up to 15 drivers at any given time. Training within this comfortable environment will ensure minimal disruption and distractions to your core business.

We can also offer training programmes at a client's own premises, or even 'on the job' in some circumstances and this flexibility is particularly useful for companies with multi-depots around the country to ensure that all their drivers receive a recognised and consistent level of training.

The Periodic Qualification requires core skills but each company will have slightly different priorities and can therefore select the areas of focus that are most relevant to their specific needs. To discuss the best programme for you, call us now on: 0115 925 0747
